Just a quick digital doodle to test out a custom texture and brush.
Edit: Tumblr uploads the quality kind of shittily tho. Click on high-res to actually see it as intended. Crisp!
Thorin has become my go to test subject for trying art things out :-P. This time was to test out inking in Manga Studio, which I got awhile back but had yet to really do anything with it. It inked like a dream! Where have you been all my life!? I still have to figure out how to do actual comic-y things with it (I’ve got a fan-comic idea involving Dori, Nori, and Ori that may be serve as my platform to delve into the software deeper), but so far I’m impressed! I might color this in later, but I’m happy to just sigh at the brush fidelity in his fur lines for now.
Finally moved, set up my computer, and got internet! Exercised my digital painting muscles with a quick sketch of my favorite brooding dwarf prince from memory (doesn’t really look like him, I know). One of the things I loved most about the film was the sheer intricacy of the character designs. I’ve got a theme percolating for a series of drawings for each dwarf, but I’m gonna keep that secret til I decide to actually go through with it :-P.
The next big thing for me is Katsucon! I’ll have a table and hopefully lots of prints and comics among other things I’m still thinking about producing. So keep your calendars tabbed!
Just a random lady to experiment with a coloring technique.
Little Owl and its little fez.
Aviator Screech Owl! This is beginning to turn into an “Owls in hats” blog…
Agh so I’m really bad about keeping a ritual. Hopefully I’ll be able to find sometime to do an owltober catch up day or something. In the mean time, have a dapper boreal owl!
Just in the nick of time for today’s Owltober feature. Space Barn Owl!
A Meristem County Update:
Yikes! Its been awhile since I’ve updated this blog with some art of my own. Sorry for the radio silence guys. Since Small Press Expo ended, several pressing things in my personal life demanded most of my attention, the biggest was my mother getting really sick for an extended period of time. A lot of my energy spent between work was to visit her, help her run errands, make phone calls, and doctor’s appointments. She’s finally on the upward curve of getting better and ready to go back to work again though! What this means though, is I haven’t been able to devote as much time as I wanted to personal artwork, and Meristem County.
However, the reboot is still happening! But as is pretty much obvious, my original deadline of “sometime in September” has passed, and the site is clearly not ready. Within this week however, I’m going to take down the site as it is and put up a completely new layout with a countdown to the legit restart. Thanks for being patient!
As I was working on retooling the plot and presentation aspects of Meristem, I’ve also found that I’d like to redesign some of the characters themselves. Above is a sketch of a slightly modified Pomme, with a slightly more somber color scheme. I plan to put up more sketches of other characters soon!

Followed a friend’s suggestion to add moonlight behind her.
I teach digital arts to little kids by day, and work on my own art by night, dreaming of becoming a super art hero. I write and draw a webcomic called "Meristem County."
